As Rick relishes in the success of Step Up 3D, Carbonated TV sits down for a chat with the star who’s dancing in and out of life’s many complicated dimensions. The stars of the Step Up franchise usually come from an extensive background. The immense talent and formal dance training of each cast member is presented within the first five minutes of the film; however, Rick Malambri reveals his background was in acting when joining the film. According to Malambri, the film franchise wanted to evolve into a more mature storyline which demanded Malambri’s character to be the designated leader rather than the head dancer. Naturally, more character development was needed rather than dancing expertise. But the experience he does bring comes from being a lifelong self-learner. Haudegen-Boy aus dem Ghetto trifft Ballerina-Girl aus der Upper Class. Gegenseitige Verachtung steht beiden ins Gesicht geschrieben, obwohl eine gemeinsame Leidenschaft vorhanden ist. Zu verschieden scheinen ihr Herkunft und ihr Lebensstil. Über die Fallstricke der Liebe stolpern beide, wie es sich gehört und landen in der alle Widerstände überwindenden innigen Umarmung, zur Freude all derer, die sich zunächst gegen sie gestellt hatten. Zu schön, um wahr zu sein, und deshalb immer wieder gerne wiedergekäuter Kinostoff, den Anne Fletcher in ihrer Tanz-Romanze „Step Up” aufbietet. Nicht selten funktioniert die Boy-meets-Girl-Geschichte, obwohl jeder sie wohl schon tausend Mal gesehen hat. Dazu braucht es dann aber doch etwas mehr Einfallsreichtum, als einen stimmigen Soundtrack und ein paar passende Choreographien. Dergleichen kann man sich 24 Stunden am Tag in diversen Musikvideos ansehen. Für einen abendfüllenden Film genügt das nicht.
