Travel Asia: Festivities and Fun
by admin on Jan.21, 2010, under Samba
Are you planning to travel to Asia within the next year, and are looking for some fun festivities to attend? Well, look no further – we’ve researched some of the more incredible Asian festivals for you to check out during your travels.
Travel Asia: Pulilan Carabao Festival
You’ll probably never see a water buffalo adorned quite like this! If you travel to Pulilan in the second week of May, you’ll witness the homage to the patron saint of farmers, San Isidro Labrador. Families take their prized water buffalos, scrape away the dirt, shave them, anoint them in oils, and then parade them around the city square dressed as kings. The priests of the Asian city then kneel and ask the buffalos to bless them, promising health and good wishes for the upcoming year to all, including visiting travelers.
Travel Asia: Parade of the God of Medicine
On the 15th day of the third lunar month, the city of Taiwan is taken over by this world-renowned Asian festivity – a must for travelers in the area because of its spectacular parade. At the nucleus of the 160 temple celebration are Pao Sheng in Taipei and the Temple of Ching Tzu in Hseuhchia. Spearheaded by a group called the Centipedes, worshippers attending the city-wide parade throw themselves on the ground to be stepped upon, as a symbolic exorcising of their demons.
Travel Asia: Yasothon Rocket Festival
In the middle of May, things get very noisy for Asian travelers to the Phaya Thaen Park in Thailand. Historically, the festival started as an offering to the gods of the sky, exploding beautiful rockets to encourage rainfall for rice crop growth. Nowadays, event has become something more of a sport, with competitions to see whose rocket can fly the farthest, and whose explodes the most.
Travel Asia: Asakusa Samba
Toyko’s version of the Rio Carnaval happens every August, in the Asakusa district. Travelers to Asia and natives alike are amazed by the colorful sequined costumes and feathers of the dancing Samba girls, along with their full bands marching down the street alongside them.
Travel Asia: The Festival of the Hungry Ghosts
Hong Kong hosts this unusual yearly event, held on the 14th day of the seventh moon (sometime in August, during a full moon). Legend says that the gates of Hades were opened on this day, and the dead who cannot rest were left to run the streets mischievously. The Yue Lan Festival, as it is known in Chinese, has natives of the city putting up odd paper monuments all over the streets, which are then ceremoniously burned on the last day.
Travel Asia: The Monkey God Festival
The Monkey God first appeared in Chinese literature during the Ming Dynasty in the book, “Pilgrims to the West”. Since then, this deity has been celebrated during the month of September at Kowloon’s Sau Mau Ping Temple, by recreating a bizarre attempted execution by other the other gods – which includes such things as a ladder of knives, and charcoal set on fire. Travelers to this strange Asian celebration need not be concerned, though – the Monkey God lived, and so do the participants in this celebration.
The above two lists just show, how complex it could be to setup a Company/Employee Handbook. But it doesn’t have to be complex, just start partial. Only include the information which are already available and use the help of your employees. The benefits of having a Company Handbook are numerous, your employees will save time, and it will be easier to improve procedures, because the procedures will be broken down into small sections of the whole procedures. Everything is clearly described, so nobody needs to ask over and over again. In case of holiday or illness of an employee, others could jump into the job, because they could be trained faster.
As employer, you could hire employees with lower education. And your employees will love it, because they know where to look, when they have questions and they could improve their working environment as well. But the most advantage for the owner is, that the organization will be able to work properly, when the business grows and when the owner might sell the business one day, it might get sold easier, because of the proper organization.
When installing a Company Handbook, you will find procedures you could automate. Automating the operation as much as possible will also be a big benefit, because employees and employer are able to focus their workforce on more important topics, such as improving the sales volume. Furthermore automatization will reduce to cost of operation as well.
A Company/Employee Handbook is a bit like a Business Plan, but far more detailed, because it will contain information on every internal procedure. Only the financial part of the business plan will not be included, but if you like you might include some financial information you like to share with your employees. As you describe your procedures just do it as a numeration or listing. The description doesn’t have to be very well formed, it’s just important that everyone who will read it is able to understand what has to be done.
Remember, a Company Handbook is a living system, if you and your employees are not updating it regularly, it will be death one day, because it will only contain old stuff. So keep all people within your business engaged in improving the Company Handbook, because it will improve your business internal organization as well. While starting to write the content of your Company Handbook, concentrate on job roles at first; afterwards write down job descriptions, in case a job role has been given to employees twice (Accounting Staff, etc.). Job Roles need to include the duties and the responsibilities of the described job.
Job Roles, Job Descriptions and Workflow-Descriptions of special procedures don’t have to be the same, but take care that the information is consistent, that means that it is written in a stream. This way the entire Company Handbook will be of benefit for everyone. When rereading something on your Company Handbook and you still have questions, than the entry is not finished.
Last but not least, your Company/Employee Handbook should be available every time. To do this, think about an Internet or Intranet Solution, depending on the size of your business. Keep it simple and slim, and you will have many benefits from it. Good Luck.

The Mystiscm of South America
by admin on Jan.15, 2010, under Samba
South America holds a mysticism and intrigue that has lured travellers for centuries. Its sheer diversity adds colour to every destination and attraction that it has to offer. Whether you prefer to gaze into the deep waters of the Amazon River or brave the hordes at Buenos Aires, you are sure to find your solace in the rich plethora of South America.
Known for its fantastic culture, deep spirituality and delectable cuisine, South America offers visitors an unbeatable range of experiences, events, sights and memories to last a lifetime. The most popular tourist attractions include the Amazon Rainforest, Macchu Pichu, Rio de Janeiro, Angel Falls, Peru and the Galápagos Islands. These are a must-see for all first-time travellers to South America and may well become favourites for future returns.
One of the recommended experiences is the Corcovado Mountain, Christ Redeemer and Sugar Loaf Mountain Day Tour in Rio de Janeiro. Incredible views are plentiful as you course through the Tijuca Rainforest on a cog train. This exciting trek transports you to the Corcovado Mountain, on which the statue, Christ the Redeemer, is perched. Lunch at the seafood restaurant as well as spectacular views of Rio, can be enjoyed from this elevated position, after which a cable car will whisk you away to the apex of Sugar Loaf Mountain. This is a fantastic option for those visiting Rio for only a short time.
Another Rio favourite is the Plataforma Samba Show, where colour and rhythm define the evening. The beautiful dancers and outstanding food don’t hurt either! The Samba is danced with splashes of African rhythm infused into it, creating an ambience of excitement and fun. This show lasts approximately 3 to 5 hours, depending on whether guests will be dining there or not.
Visitors to Buenos Aires are urged to go on the Argentina Fiesta Gaucha Day Trip, which comprises a full day trip through the Argentinean pampas to a traditional ranch, or estancia. Whilst putting your feet up in the gorgeous landscape of Argentina, a traditional barbecue will be fired up and accompanied by song and dance of their folklore. A display of their horse riding abilities will amaze visitors. This is a true gaucho experience, and includes collection and drop-off at your hotel.
The Amazon and all its splendour are waiting for you to discover them. Find ancient relics, exotic animals and more! Ditch the stressful city life for a couple of weeks of beauty and ancient tales of worlds long forgotten by us today.
Remember to check out my website for more ideas on where to travel in the beauty Latin American landscape as well as tips on what to see, when to see it and more importantly, how to get the full experience for cheap!
Much of South America remains rural, and several vaccines are required for tourists entering into and leaving the country. These include Hepatitis A and B, Malaria, Rabies and Typhoid. Depending on the specific destination, others may also be necessary, but you should consult your health specialist in this regard.

Baden Powell De Aquino – Guitar Pioneer
by admin on Jan.09, 2010, under Samba
Baden Powell was one of the towering figures of the Brazilian Bossa Nova idiom. His music was enjoyed throughout the whole world, and his collaboration with the poet Vinicius de Moraes and interpretations of the work of other composers ensure Baden Powell a place among the masters of Latin music. Many famous Bossa Nova songs were co-written by Baden Powell include Samba de Pintinho, Quaquaraquaqua, Fim de Linha, Valse No. 1, Samba Triste, Tempo Feliz, Cidade Vazia, Babel and Casa Velha. His songs written with Vinicius de Moraes include Para uma Menina com uma Flor and Samba da Bênção which were included on the soundtrack of the 1966 Cannes film festival winner, A Man and a Woman.
The middle years of the twentieth century saw the Brazilian dance music known as Bossa Nova take the world by storm. It is basically the Brazilian Samba informed musically by the chords and harmonies of American jazz. Bossa Nova, which means “new trend” in Brazilian is thought by many to owe its existence to Antonio Carlos Jobim who had an overwhelming love of jazz. Guitar player, Baden Powell, contributed many compositions to the Bossa Nova idiom, and also added his depth of experience absorbed from the world of the classical guitar.
The Bossa Nova might have remained an exclusively Brazilian phenomenon if it had not been for the 1959 movie, The Black Orpheus. This movie proved to be a considerable international success and introduced to the world the music of Antonio Carlos Jobim and Luiz Bonfa. The popularity of Brazilian music in the wider world was sealed as famous jazz musicians Stan Getz and Charlie Byrd began recording their own interpretations of Bossa Nova music.
Baden Powell, named after the founder of the Boy Scouts, was born in 1937 and soon showed himself to be a natural guitarist. Inspired not only by the music of his country but also by American jazz. Heavily influenced by jazz guitar player, Django Reinhardt and pop guitarist Les Paul, he found himself playing electric guitar professionally by the age of thirteen. About seven years later, Baden Powell fell in love with the classical guitar and decided to devote all his musical energies to that instrument.
Brazil was a hotbed of musical interest in the nineteen sixties, seething with various modes of expression through Brazilian, American and European musical idioms. Jazz became Baden Powell’s musical medium expressed using classical guitar technique, and he found himself recording his own version of music by Thelonious Monk and Jerome Kern.
At the same time Baden Powell did not isolate himself from the informal music which was appearing spontaneously all around him. His enjoyment of Brazilian street music no doubt stopped his guitar playing from becoming to stilted due to his classical training. He can even be heard on records scat singing along with his guitar like a typical jazz performer.
Baden Powell, along with jazz guitar player Charlie Byrd, has been an enormous influence in maintaining the acoustic guitar’s presence in the world of popular music.
